Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
